The Minnesota Paid Family Medical Leave (PFML) program aims to provide financial support to employees who need to take time off for family or medical reasons.

This leave is in addition to PTO, SICK and ESST time that may have been previously used or may not be offered at all.

It's essential to note that the PFML program is distinct from the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). While FMLA provides unpaid leave, the Minnesota PFML program offers paid leave, making it a crucial resource for many families.

Important Dates

Familiarizing yourself with the timeline for the Minnesota Paid Family Medical Leave program is critical for effectively planning your leave. Keep these dates in mind:

  • December 1, 2025: Employee notices.

  • January 1, 2026: Employee deductions must start.

  • April 30, 2026: Quarterly reporting due.

Keeping track of these important dates will help ensure compliance for you as the employer and allow employees to access their benefits.

How Much It Is

A key concern for employee and employers surrounding the Minnesota Paid Family Medical Leave program is the impact to the School's budget and the employee's paycheck. The exact premium in a private plan will depend, but the state plan is .88% of wages with employers paying at least half of the premium (.44%).

As an employee receiving the benefit, the exact financial support you receive will depend on your average weekly wage and how long you take leave. Send an email to info@edfinmn.org and we will send you the calculations.
